13 August 2026, Scoresby Sund, Greenland - Guests on board two of Oceanwide Expeditions' vessels enjoyed a spectacular total eclipse in Scoresby Sund, Northeast Greenland, on unique itineraries designed around the line of totality on 12 August 2026.

On 12 August 2026, m/v Hondius and m/v Plancius positioned themselves deep in Scoresby Sund, the largest fjord system on Earth in Northeast Greenland, for the centerpiece of two unique expedition itineraries - the Northeast Greenland Solar Eclipse Explorer Voyage. These trips were designed around the line of totality, which lay directly overhead of Scoresby Sund, providing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience a total solar eclipse in one of the most remote places on Earth.

Both vessels proceeded into Øfjord, a near 100 km long fjord that winds its way to the edge of the Greenland ice sheet. Guests were provided with viewing glasses, and as the start of the eclipse, roughly 16:30 local time, approached, the decks of both vessels were filled with tripods and camera equipment, excited chatter, and awe-struck silence. The eclipse reached totality at 17:35 local time, with the entire eclipse lasting for around two hours.

"It was really surreal, like someone flicked the switch to turn the lights off on the world. We were all in absolute awe; all passengers and crew just stood, utterly mesmerized." - Gabi Kolodko, Expedition Guide

Both voyages were sold out well in advance, with a diverse range of interests on board, from astronomers and photographers to wildlife enthusiasts and global travelers seeking to tick off a true bucket list experience. Watching the total eclipse from the deck of Hondius was Dr. Tyler Nordgren, retired professor of astronomy and physics at the University of Redlands and Night Sky Ambassador, who also gave a lecture to guests about the eclipse as part of the expedition team.

"It was a spectacular success! We saw the most awe-inspiring sight in the most incredible location. Everyone on board was over the moon, laughing and hugging one another. I always tell people who hope to see a total solar eclipse: Go someplace you’ve always wanted to go, and if the weather is clear for totality, then it will be the cherry on top. That’s what we’ve all chosen to do by coming to Greenland. It’s been the trip of a lifetime." - Tyler Nordgren, Astronomer & Night Sky Ambassador

Scoresby Sund is the setting for Oceanwide Expeditions' late-season Greenland voyages and industry-leading long hikes trips, which allow guests to spend entire days away from the vessel, as part of the company's immersion-chasing approach to expedition cruising. These itineraries highlight the unique nature of Oceanwide Expeditions' voyages, which seek to redefine the expedition experience, offering one-off voyages, industry-leading itineraries, and trips that venture beyond the standard routes in both the Arctic and Antarctica.
