Two for the Snow: Polar Cruises for Couples

by Oceanwide Expeditions Blog

The romantic side of the polar regions

Do you know the old saying, “Cold hands, warm heart”? In our opinion, that bodes well for couples who visit the polar regions.

After all, there’s a reason so many people get married in the Arctic, Antarctica, or sub-Antarctic. The exotic wildlife and incredible scenery of these remote locations are perfect substitutes for the usual fare of Italian villas or Caribbean beaches.

Here are five of our most popular cruises for polar-inclined couples.

1. Sail around Svalbard in search of polar bears

We often offer Arctic cruises that focus on the more northerly shores of Svalbard, one of the best places on the planet for spotting polar bears. When local conditions allow, some of these trips also visit our farthest northern point along the 82nd parallel. These wildlife-centered voyages are great for couples who love animals, especially those not seen anywhere else.

2. Enjoy a classic Antarctic expedition

Our Antarctica Discovery and Learning cruises follow a longstanding Antarctic route, giving you and your partner a fantastic survey of some of the continent’s key sights. Depending on which version of this program you choose, you may travel to iconic Antarctic locations like Neko Harbour, Paradise Bay, Port Lockroy, and the ghostly wreck of the Guvernøren, possibly spotting gentoo and Adélie penguins, humpback and minke whales, leopard seals, and near-limitless seabirds.

3. See Greenland's Scoresby Sund & northern lights

Autumn is a naturally romantic month, full of fiery red leaves, smoky blue evenings, and the beautiful aurora borealis - if you and your loved one know where to look. Scoresby Sund is a good place to start. The largest fjord system in Greenland and the world, Scoresby Sund will wow you as much with its landscapes as its northern lights.

4. Take an Antarctic cruise in the Weddell or Ross seas

These expansive Antarctic trips reveal a rarely seen wilderness where you will not only enjoy spectacular icescapes but also get the chance to see whales, seals, and numerous seabirds - even emperor penguins. Plus, if conditions permit, we aim to take helicopter flights to penguin colonies that cannot be visited any other way. Among our most exclusive cruises, the Ross Sea trip in particular is only offered during certain seasons.

5. Visit the Falklands, South Georgia, & Antarctic Peninsula

Sometimes all it takes for a great couple’s getaway are flocks of seabirds, ice-filled fjords, and a lot of picture-perfect penguins. Our longer trips to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and Antarctic Peninsula provide all of the above. Not only will you fill your cameras with photos, you’ll fill your senses with incredible Antarctic experiences that you and your beloved can reminisce about for years to come.
