Voyage overview

During sea days, the chances of encountering whales and other marine life, from flying fish to dolphins, are high. Witness the northbound spring migration of seabirds like Arctic terns and long-tailed skuas, who will join us in crossing the Equator - a true odyssey of the natural world!

Day 1: Heading out of St. Helena

Our voyage starts in Jamestown, a uniquely situated city that offers much to see before we set sail. Enjoy the local British culture, tropical climate, and endemic birds of this remote volcanic island. You can visit Longwood House, where Napoleon died in 1821, and even walk the 699-step Jacob’s Ladder if you feel ambitious. If you have more time, you can also go on small hikes or snorkeling in the shallows, seeing multitudes of tropical and subtropical fish.

Today we aim to sail along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the sprawling submarine mountain range that runs about 16,000 km (10,000 miles) from the Arctic Ocean toward the southern tip of Africa. Join us for stargazing on the aft deck, where we will show you the many highlights of the equatorial sky. Weather permitting, these celestial wonders can be seen with binoculars or even with the naked eye.

Joining us across the equator are Arctic terns and long-tailed skuas flying their northbound spring migration. At this stage of the voyage, we will hope for good weather as we attempt more stargazing on deck, observing how the polar star becomes visible on the northern horizon.

We will sail by Ilhéus do Rombo and Sao Filipe on Fogo Island, offering a chance to spot some of the Western Palearctic species. This provides an excellent opportunity to observe diverse bird species and enjoy the scenic views of the island from the water.

We arrive in the town of Praia on Santiago Island, Cape Verde, and disembark after breakfast. Following disembarkation, the ship will begin preparations for the return journey towards its homeport in the Netherlands.

All great journeys come to an end, and this adventure concludes here in Praia. However, for those who wish to explore the area further after the voyage, there are several opportunities. One recommendation is a visit to the historic Cidade Velha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This old city is home to a massive hillside fortress built to defend against English raiders of the past. Other notable sights include the oldest Christian church in the tropics and the historically important Pillory Square. Alternatively, you can simply wander the streets of Praia, soaking up the local atmosphere and enjoying the sounds of folk music drifting from the taverns.

What Our Travelers Say

Since we curate unique itineraries for every sailing, these reviews reflect similar past cruises. They illustrate the general atmosphere and quality standards, though specific activities and wildlife encounters will vary.
We had a great trip which gave us all that we were hoping for. Incredible number of whales and pinguins and beautiful weather after a very stormy drake passage. Crew and guides were amazing with all the interesting lectures and wonderful food and service. Also the other guests on the boat were great. I truly recommend this trip.

Antarctica

Very unique trip to the Antarctic Peninsula and South Circle. The staff made the trip so special. Experienced expedition crew, good food and overall very happy with the trip.
I started this trip with no idea about what to expect as you never know 'til the end what the weather will allow you to do. The forecast predicted a Drake's shake (waves up to 6 mt), a real adventurous start! After that we got luckier and luckier everyday more: during our sail and also during our zodiac cruises we were surrounded by whales, orcas, seals literally everywhere. It's something i will never forget and all the members of the crew were excited as well. The whole crew was amazing, they took care of us even in "shaking" moments. The wildlife and the scenery is just breathtaking and unbelievable. Also, it's amazing to see how much passionate they all are doing their job, Captain included. You share so many emotions with the other passengers that you feel like part of a family. This is my second cruise on the vessel Plancius. I love it because it has a good size with not too many passengers so every activity runs smoothly. High recommended!

Antarctica

My main objective was to see antarctic wildlife. We had ample time to observe interactions between animals. Historical site visits were nice too!
This was the trip of a lifetime. Every detail from the staff, to the food, accommodation and tours was perfect.

m/v Plancius

Our most longstanding vessel, Plancius is a classic choice for some of our most popular polar voyages.
