At the height of summer, the Arctic becomes a land without night. Around the summer solstice, the sun reaches its northernmost position in the sky, bringing the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Far north of the Arctic Circle, this astronomical event marks the height of summer sun - but 24-hour daylight arrives long before the summer solstice! Here, the light won't dim for many weeks!
For an expedition cruise in Svalbard, the summer solstice forms part of several voyages during the height of the expedition season. It marks a remarkable time of year when the High Arctic is bathed in almost continuous light, creating exceptional conditions for exploration, both on land and in the pack ice, wildlife watching, and polar photography!
What is the summer solstice?
The summer solstice marks the astronomical beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere and the longest day of the year.
The farther north you travel, the more dramatic the effect becomes. Above the Arctic Circle, the sun does not set. Instead, it remains above the horizon, bringing the midnight sun. In Svalbard and the Arctic pack ice, this period is particularly striking. The archipelago experiences the midnight sun for several months, and the sun doesn't set until late August. During the polar summer, day and night effectively become one!
Experience the midnight sun in Svalbard
Svalbard lies deep within the Arctic, halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole. Here, the summer solstice occurs long after 24-hour daylight has arrived - typically the sun doesn't set from late April to late August.
Here, in the summer months, there is no conventional sunset. Instead, the sun travels low across the northern horizon before climbing again, casting long shadows and changing the appearance of mountains, glaciers, sea ice, and tundra throughout the day.
This gives our Svalbard expedition cruise a unique rhythm. You don't need to wait for morning to set out, or return to the ship simply because darkness is approaching. Wildlife watching, Zodiac cruising, photography, and time ashore can take place at any hour!
The endless daylight also coincides with a period of intense activity in the Arctic environment. Summer brings life to the tundra and seabird cliffs, while marine mammals can be encountered around the coastline, fjords, and sea ice.
This means more opportunities to experience Svalbard's landscapes and wildlife in changing conditions. For photographers, the endless light produces warm tones, long shadows, reflections, and striking textures across Svalbard's glaciers, mountains, sea ice, and tundra. At the height of summer, the bright light is fantastic for wildlife shots, framed against backdrops of tundra, rock, and ice.
Experience the Arctic during the summer solstice
Our expedition cruises run throughout the height of the Arctic summer, with several occurring during the summer solstice itself, in June. Ice conditions, light, wildlife, and possibilities for immersive activities all combine into a perfect tapestry for adventure in the High Arctic, making the summer solstice, and the weeks either side of it, the ideal time for the polar adventure of a lifetime in Svalbard!
