03.26.2026 - Vlissingen, NL - Oceanwide Expeditions, veteran polar operator and leader in the expedition cruise industry, is pleased to announce the signing of a Letter of Intent for the construction and delivery of two eco-sail expedition vessels, designed to offer the same small-ship, authentic expedition experience for which the company is known, while aligning with their efforts in promoting and supporting a future for environmentally-conscious polar tourism.
Both vessels will have a capacity of 146 passengers and boast a variety of sustainability-focused features built into their designs. Most notably, the vessels will be constructed with a hybrid sail propulsion system, reducing fuel consumption and lowering operational emissions. These eco-sail vessels are considered an iteration of Oceanwide Expeditions' existing Hondius-class design, while introducing significant upgrades to both vessel operation and guest experience. The first vessel is planned for launch in 2029, with the second following in 2030. Commercialization of both vessels is expected to begin by early 2027 with further communication planned for the coming months.
This announcement reinforces Oceanwide Expeditions' approach to proactive design and leadership in industry developments and fleet implementation. When launched in 2019, m/v Hondius was the world's first Polar Class 6 small expedition vessel and was constructed from the ground up with expedition cruising in mind. More recently, Oceanwide Expeditions has invested heavily in technical and visual enhancements to its existing fleet to align with IAATO and AECO framework, and broader environmental efforts and regulations.
"We are excited to announce the signing of this Letter of Intent and look ahead with enthusiasm to the next chapter in the Oceanwide Expeditions fleet. Sailing has been part of our DNA from the start, and these eco-sail vessels will integrate modern sustainability features, hybrid propulsion, and a smaller footprint into the same authentic, immersive Oceanwide guest experience. These vessels are a key part of our long-term vision to remain small-scale, operationally flexible, and environmentally responsible." - Rémi Bouysset, CEO, Oceanwide Expeditions
Further details of both vessels, including names, shipyard partners, and specific design features, will be shared as the construction timeline progresses.
