The lay of Sommarøy’s land

Arctic cruise passengers are often surprised to find that Norway has its own fair share of fun destinations. Primarily a fishing village, Sommarøy blossoms into a popular go-to stop for locals and visitors alike.

Sommarøy is a fairly young town of about 880 permanent settlers. Founded around 1900, the area’s previous settlement was on the neighbouring island of Hillesøya. Hillesøya was the site of churches going well back into the Middle Ages, but as the parish grew it was decided that the locals needed more room than Hillesøya could provide. The church itself was moved to Brensholmen on the west coast of the island of Kvaløya, while many of the parishioners moved their homesteads over to Sommarøy.

Nowadays Sommarøy offers visitors a variety of activities with which they can explore the area. The beaches are always inviting of course, and you can also enjoy whale watching, fishing, and (depending on the time of year) you might just catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights.
