Qaanaaq (Thule)
Located at latitude of 77°28′ north it is one of the northernmost settlements in the world. The current name for the village is Qaanaaq but still many prefer the more mythical name Thule. The present location of the settlement is fairly recent, two ancient Inuit settlements further south were relocated in 1953 when the United States build a large airbase there.
The name Thule was first posed by the Greek Pytheas. Around 325 BC he claimed to have made a voyage to Thule, a distant northerly land. One of the relocated settlements was given the name Thule in 1910 by the famous Danish explorers Knud Rasmussen and Peter Freuchen, when they build a trading-post there.
