Itinerary

PLEASE NOTE: All itineraries are for guidance only. Programs may vary depending on local ice, weather, and wildlife conditions. The on-board expedition leader will determine the final itinerary. Flexibility is paramount for expedition cruises. Average cruising speed of m/v Plancius is 10.5 knots.

Day 1: End of the World, Start of a Journey

Your voyage begins where the world drops off: Ushuaia, Argentina, reputed to be the southernmost city on the planet, located on the far southern tip of South America. Starting in the afternoon, you embark from this small resort town on Tierra del Fuego – nicknamed “The End of the World” – and sail the scenic, mountain-fringed Beagle Channel for the rest of the evening.

Day 2 - 5: Crossing the Convergence

En route to South Georgia, you pass the Antarctic Convergence – Antarctica’s natural boundary, formed when north-flowing cold waters collide with warmer subantarctic seas – and enter the circum-Antarctic upwelling zone. Along with albatrosses, shearwaters, petrels, prions, and skuas, it is also possible to see several species of whales and dolphins during the crossing.

Day 6 – 10: South Georgia Journey

Welcome to one of the most surreally beautiful locations on Earth, both in terms of landscape and wildlife – and you’re seeing it all at perhaps the best time of the year. Autumn spells the peak of the king penguin numbers on this island, with numerous newly hatched king penguin chicks (and parents still on their eggs) to be found. The beaches are swarming with penguins as well as countless Antarctic fur seal pups playing in the surf. You may also see southern elephant seals and gentoo penguins molting, along with the endemic South Georgia pipit and pintail. Macaroni penguin chicks are also fledging here, and the eggs of the wandering albatross have started to hatch. (If a landing at Prion Island is possible, you may catch a rare sight of their fluffy white chicks.) Light-mantled albatrosses and grey-headed albatrosses breed on this island, and chances are good you will encounter these birds too. Last but certainly not least, humpback whales, fin whales, minke whales, southern right whales, and possibly even blue whales can be found here. You might also visit Fortuna Bay, where droves of penguins and seals inhabit the beaches, then follow the final section of Shackleton’s route to the abandoned whaling village of Stromness. This route cuts across the mountain pass beyond Shackleton’s Waterfall. The terrain is partly swampy here, so expect to cross some small streams along the way. At Grytviken, you can also see an abandoned whaling station where king penguins walk the streets and elephant seals lie about like they own the place – because they just about do. You might also be able to visit the South Georgia Museum and Shackleton’s grave. Salisbury Plain, St. Andrews Bay, Gold Harbour, and Right Whale Bay house the four largest king penguin colonies in South Georgia. Copper Bay likewise offers a variety of wildlife, including macaroni, gentoo, and chinstrap penguins. You may be able to partake in an additional pre-breakfast activity on day 10.

Day 11 - 15: Sea Road to Montevideo

Doubling back across the Antarctic Convergence, you head once more into warmer waters. The birdlife is prolific here, with numerous species of tube-noses that trail the vessel north. Keep a sharp lookout: Rarely seen species have been known to show up this time of year.

Day 16: Home Port

Every adventure, no matter how grand, must eventually come to an end. It’s now time to disembark in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, but with memories that will accompany you wherever your next adventure lies.
