The former wintering site of East Base

East Base is an American scientific research station located on Antarctica’s Stonington Island. Commissioned by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939, the base became an Antarctic Historic Site or Monument in 2004. Once the wintering site of two US expeditions from 1939 to 1948, East Base is located near (230 meters or 750 feet away, in fact) the British Station E.

What we love about exploring East Base

East Base is among the most popular research stations we visit. Landings here are easy, there are a number of buildings built during the boom of Antarctic research, and the base’s artifacts are quite well preserved. There is also a small but fascinating museum at East Base. Make sure to bring a headlamp, however, as the grounds here are expansive and fun to explore.
