On 12 August 2026, m/v Hondius and m/v Plancius positioned themselves deep in Scoresby Sund, the largest fjord system on Earth in Northeast Greenland, for the centerpiece of two unique expedition itineraries - the Northeast Greenland Solar Eclipse Explorer Voyage. These trips were designed around the line of totality, which lay directly overhead of Scoresby Sund, providing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience a total solar eclipse in one of the most remote places on Earth.
Both vessels proceeded into Øfjord, a near 100 km long fjord that winds its way to the edge of the Greenland ice sheet. Guests were provided with viewing glasses, and as the start of the eclipse, roughly 16:30 local time, approached, the decks of both vessels were filled with tripods and camera equipment, excited chatter, and awe-struck silence. The eclipse reached totality at 17:35 local time, with the entire eclipse lasting for around two hours.

Watching the total eclipse from the deck of Hondius was Dr. Tyler Nordgren, retired professor of astronomy and physics at the University of Redlands and Night Sky Ambassador, who also gave a lecture to guests about the eclipse as part of the expedition team.
