Moments later, with the sun already having worked wonders on our mood, Marco on the radio announced that the bear had been spotted nearby, making its way down the mountain toward the sea. And sure enough, we watched it descend to the coast, swimming in front of the ice cap, and finally emerging from the water to walk a few hundred meters.

Resting on a patch of land near the glacial fringe was a beautiful female polar bear. To our delight and amusement, she was fast asleep.

For almost two hours, our little group paddled along the shoreline of Signehamna, and even though the landscape was breathtaking, it were the tens of Eider ducklings and multiple Barnacle goslings that stole the show.

For the next hours numerous binoculars, scopes and cameras were raised and many more naked eyes started to scan the water surface and icy landscape for wildlife.

we could find the tracks of many different bird species, reindeer, arctic foxes, and even paw prints of a polar bear that must have been several weeks old.

Then, as if the day had not already provided enough excitement, three polar bears were spotted resting in the snow nearby.

The walruses did not disappoint! Seeing these massive kings of the beach hauled out in their natural habitat was the perfect, serene ending to our expedition.
