Oceanwide Expeditions Embarkation Protocol

For the Antarctic 2022-2023 season starting in October, COVID-19 protocols on our vessels have been updated based on worldwide developments, further Covid relaxation, and local regulations / guidelines. The following onboard health and safety protocols apply:
 
Pre-embarkation process
  • All passengers, crew, and staff must be fully vaccinated, with their most recent dose taken within the last 270 days (nine months). “Fully vaccinated” is defined as two weeks after receiving both doses in a two-dose series or one dose of a single-dose vaccine. The second dose of a two-dose series may be substituted by a recovery certificate (recovered from COVID-19 within the last 180 days). The additional vaccine dose, or booster shot, has an unlimited validity period.
  • No obligatory preventive testing will take place on our vessels. Upon request, COVID-19 self-tests are available and can be purchased on board.

Local health measures and recommendations

Local authorities require all passengers to obtain health insurance that includes COVID-19 coverage (hospitalization, isolation, and/or sanitary transfer services) providing follow-up and support to possible affected or suspected cases. In the event of a positive test, Argentine authorities also require a total of FIVE (5) full days of isolation starting from the date symptoms began.

This means that isolation following a positive COVID-19 test should be continued on shore if symptoms began fewer than five days before the end of the voyage. We are required to report all positive cases to local health authorities after disembarkation.

It is the traveler’s responsibility to comply with all local regulations.

Positive cases

  • Respiratory tract infections can begin with vague symptoms such as headache and blocked nose or more classic influenza-like symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, and generally feeling unwell.
  • Report to onboard doctor if you have symptoms to receive a COVID-19 test.
  • Infected passengers (COVID or non) are recommended to stay in their cabins, have meals in their cabins and minimize contact with other passengers and crew. There is no requirement to go into isolation unless strictly indicated by a doctor or medical advisor.
  • Passengers with infectious disease-related complaints such as COVID, flu, or heavy cough should wear a face mask and respect safe distances from other passengers.

Onboard Protocols

Required onboard practices

While on the vessels, all passengers and Oceanwide staff must follow the suggested best practices for communicable disease prevention:

  • Avoid shaking hands or touching face
  • Cough and sneeze into a tissue or inside of elbow
  • Wash or sanitize hands thoroughly and regularly
  • Maintain distance where possible in public areas
  • Follow updated advice from the World Health Organization and local authorities

In general, face masks are not obligatory on the vessels. Passengers can move freely on board, including in public spaces, while respecting other passengers (for example, some may choose to wear a face mask and keep a safe distance).

In case of a positive COVID-19 test, passengers should wear a face mask in contact with others.

Vessel and staff updates

In addition to the above protocols, updates to our vessels and enhancements to our staff practices will further protect passengers on board:

  • Upgraded ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems that enable fresh air intake and UV-based air filtration technology
  • Thermal cameras for continuous automated temperature screening
  • Enhanced cleaning and sanitation products and procedures
  • Disinfection with dispersion technology
  • Outbreak prevention and response plan
  • Vaccination of all staff and crew
  • PCR and/or antigen testing if required by local protocols or in case of suspected symptoms

Information and requirements for travel

As requirements vary per destination, it is the traveler’s responsibility to comply with all safety practices. Upon request, we can issue a statement confirming a guest has taken an onboard COVID-19 test for an additional charge. Oceanwide cannot guarantee this statement will guarantee travel or entry into a country.

Before travelling, consider the risk that you may be infected or impacted by restrictions, entry bans, quarantines, or other safety measures. In addition, check the capacity of the health service at your destination and how you can return home in case you become ill.
