An Industry-Leading Team Bursting with Polar Expertise
Our expedition guides are not scripted presenters or seasonal tour leaders, despite being so personable and charismatic! Rather, they are seasoned professionals who have lived and worked in the polar world in a variety of guises. Some have served as Antarctic station leaders, Arctic and Antarctic field researchers, logistics coordinators in some of the most remote places on Earth, and are highly skilled wilderness experts. Others are photographers, historians, and specialists in subjects ranging from glaciology and marine biology to oceanography, geology, astronomy, and more!

It's this firsthand experience that adds so much authenticity, credibility, and depth to every landing, lecture, and Zodiac cruise. Our landings are highly varied; polar operators frequently visit some locations, while others are seldom reached. We go to places no other operator ventures to, setting the skill and knowledge of our team apart from the rest! Doing so makes it even more crucial to have real experts aboard who know the intimate details of the locations we find ourselves in - you can't Google everything, especially at the ends of the Earth!
This real-world expertise also allows guides to make informed decisions in dynamic polar conditions. They work closely with our expert vessel crews to adjust itineraries based on weather, ice, and wildlife activity. The result is a flexible, expedition-style experience that prioritizes discovery over rigid schedules. Nothing is guaranteed, and few things are fully off the table!
A Team Built on Diversity of Expertise & Background
Our expedition guides are second to none in terms of diversity of experience and specialization. On a single voyage, the depth of insight and knowledge available to guests is astonishing, with representation from multiple disciplines ensuring there's always something new to learn, even for repeat adventurers! Our on-board experience is also designed to be as relaxed and inclusive as possible, with expedition guides sharing the space with guests. You'll have a chance to chat to our guides throughout the day, and at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, swap stories over food and a well-earned drink.
Beyond facilitating landings and guiding immersive activities such as hiking, kayaking, camping, and mountaineering, our guides also provide a selection of lectures, briefings, and debriefings on board. Briefings and debriefings occur daily, while lectures are often given on sea days or during periods between landings when our vessels readjust their position.

Many of these lectures will be specific to the locations and wildlife encounters you may have had that day or during previous excursions, while others will focus on specific topics of particular interest on different itineraries. You might be able to learn from glaciologists or geologists as they describe the forces that have sculpted polar landscapes over millennia, or hear polar historians recounting dramatic tales of human endurance while you stay warm with a cup of cocoa.
In the field, you'll learn from marine biologists and wildlife experts as they interpret animal behaviour, and gain valuable skills from seasoned photographers. Seeing a breaching whale or a colony of penguins is unforgettable. Understanding the ecological relationships, migration patterns, and conservation challenges behind those moments makes them transformative. We pride ourselves on our ability to bridge the gap between simple observation and understanding.

While the language on our vessels is English, our guides come from an equally diverse range of backgrounds as our guests, and you'll hear global languages and a blend of cultures aboard each of our vessels. On select voyages, we offer dual-language services. We follow AECO and IAATO guidelines for wildlife observation and polar exploration, and are committed to minimizing our impact in the regions in which we operate.
During your voyage, you'll learn how to observe wildlife without disturbance, follow biosecurity protocols, and respect fragile ecosystems. This experience becomes a shared commitment that begins in the polar regions and extends to other aspects of a guest's life. Along with responsible practices, our guides have a responsibility to ensure the safety of our guests. To this end, they take part in a series of training courses, from first aid and survival skills to rifle competency, Zodiac driving, and interpersonal development. These training courses occur both in the field and in the classroom. We require certification for our guides and ensure strict compliance at all times.
