Tristan da Cunha Collection: 18 Pics from Earth's Most Remote Islands

by Oceanwide Expeditions Blog

Regions: Antarctica

Destinations: Tristan da Cunha

Photo-friendly Tristan da Cunha

The best pictures aren't always found in the first place you look.

In fact, sometimes they're about as far away as you can get. And it's hard to imagine a more far-flung earthly destination than Tristan da Cunha.

The most remote island on the planet, Tristan da Cunha is positioned about 2,166 miles (3,486 km) from the Falkland Islands; 1,511 miles (2,432 km) from South Africa; and 1,343 miles (2,161 km) from Saint Helena.

Its capital, Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, is a common port into which voyages (like many of our own Antarctic trips) make landings. There visitors can encounter some of the fascinating culture, landscapes, and wildlife for which Tristan da Cunha is too seldom celebrated.

Here are a few of our personal favorites.

1. Edinburgh of the Seven Seas

2. Wandering albatross

3. Tristan da Cunha from the deck of Plancius

4. Sub-Antarctic fur seal

5. Southern right whale

6. Scenic Tristan da Cunha settlement

7. Sooty albatross

8. Tristan da Cunha potato fields

9. Tristan thrush (or starchy)

10. Tristan da Cunha from a distance

11. Great shearwater

12. Approaching Tristan da Cunha

13. Blue whale
