The immaculately maintained gem of Station Y

Station Y is a well-preserved British research station established on Horseshoe Island, near the Antarctic Peninsula, in 1955. It was occupied, on and off, until 1969, when it became primarily used by British Antarctic Survey workers doing field work from Rothera Station. Since 1995, it has been an Antarctic Historic Site or Monument.

Visiting Station Y and stepping back into the past

Our guides and guests love seeing Station Y. Landings to the site are easy, and the station itself is a stunning example of a British base from the heyday of polar research, preserving its original interior as well as many great artifacts (such as two well-maintained dinghies near the landing site). A headlamp can be useful at Station Y for looking into the base’s many windows.
