Seymour Island, also known as Marambio Island
Seymour Island is part of a chain made up of 16 islands that lie around the tip of the Graham Land area of the Antarctic Peninsula, the closest part of Antarctica to South America. Snow Hill Island, Vega Island, and James Ross Island also lie close by. Seymour Island is also called Marambio Island or Seymour-Marambio Island after the Argentine Base Antárctica Marambio.
Historical monuments on Seymour Island
In 1903 an Argentinian crew rescued the members of the Swedish expedition led by Otto Nordenskiöld from Seymour Island after they were shipwrecked. The site where they met, Penguins Bay, was commemorated with a wooden plaque and rock cairn erected in 1990 by Argentina. This Seymour Island site is now an Historic Site or Monument (HSM 60) recognized under the Antarctic Treaty.
