The expressively named Inexpressible Island
Inexpressible Island, located in the Terra Nova Bay of Antarctica’s Victoria Land, is a rocky island where the Northern Party of Robert Falcon Scott’s Terra Nova Expedition of 1910 – 1913 was forced to overwinter in 1912. When their ship was unable to retrieve them, the crew, led by Victor Campbell, dug a small ice cave on Inexpressible Island in which to live. Incredibly, they all survived, and the site where they did so is now an Antarctic Historic Site or Monument (HSM 14).
