Nordaustlandet’s premier ice cap
When expedition guides refer to the Nordaustlandet ice cap, they are generally referring to two in particular: Austfonna and Vegafonna. These ice caps have a combined surface area of 8,450 square km (3,263 square miles), and Austfonna alone covers around 58% of Nordaustlandet. This cap in fact forms a colossal glacier front that spans from the bay of Vibebukta to the headland of Kapp Laura.
