Year

door Robert Cartwright Jr
As a kid, I read up on everything I could about the South Pole, then as I got older, I started to read about all the expeditions to Antarctica. Time went by and my interest in the White Continent grew, so much so that I started to look into tours that went there. But my goal was not to just "cruise to Antarctica", but to actually set foot on the continent. Little did I realize that my dreams of doing would be accomplished a few years later. After being postponed for 3 years, 2023 was the year of making the dream come true, and what a dream it turned out to be. Far from anything that I could have imagined or prepared myself for, this expedition on the m/v Plancius became a life changing event. From the amazing staff and crew, to all the many people I met from around the world, we not only traveled to Antarctica, but crossed the circle, then went even further south (68 degrees South!), so my ultimate goal was met. But with all the adventures of the landings we made, seeing all the wildlife (penguins, whales, seals) and landscapes that defy the imagination. The only thing I can say is that this was a trip of a lifetime, and one I will never forget.

The Deep South Tour on Plancius was wonderful. The landscape and wildlife of Antartica is breathtaking and unique. Our guides and ship crew were phantastic (experienced scientists and superb crew).I wish the cook would publish a cook book! It was the best trip of my life. Thank you all so much for this unforgettable experience!!
The crew were wonderful, the places we visited were otherworldly, and the expedition guides were top notch. Highly recommended.

The trip was fantastic. Antarctica is worth a visit and I truly hope it will never be spoiled. The crew on the Hondius were the best. Expedition guides were very knowledgeable and I learned a lot.

This Ross Sea trip was breathtaking beautiful! And we learned a lot during the lectures on board. Walking on the snow after a zodiac-ride, seeing the historic huts or wildlife, is great. Flying with helicopters over icebergs, fjords and glaciers...wonderful and feeling like 007! We saw many penguins, seals and pods of orca's. Thank you crew, staff and employees of Ortelius, our ship'family' was unique!
There's just no way how to review this trip. Let's just say that a 5 star rating just doesn't do this trip justice. The staff was great. The guides went to the maximum to let us enjoy as much as the weather allowed us. No effort seemed to much for the team. The breakfast, lunch and diner were exellent. Cabin was very comfortable. All the lectures and knowledge that was shared. The overall welcome feeling aboard the ship. Let's not even start about the scenery. I always thought this would be a once in a lifetime trip, but now that i've been there i know i will be back with Oceanwide one day. It has been worth all the saving and all the travelling to Ushuaia. very very well done!

A first-class experience with incredible crew, staff, teachers and co-passengers. Not even in my wildest dreams could I have imagined what I saw and experienced when visiting Antarctica. As a seasoned traveler and passionate environmentalist, I was invigorated and joyfully surprised at all moments. The professionalism and hospitality was top notch, and I can't go without giving the dining room and cleaning staff the biggest of props for working their butts off to make us all feel at home the entire time we were on the ship. Can't wait to travel with Oceanwide again!

I have been to many places around the world but when people ask where my favorite place is I can't decide because each location had its unique bits about it. After having gone on this trip to Antarctica I can say hands down this has been the best trip I've been on. Antarctica has been the best place I have visited. I know you can't control the weather or wildlife but I was fortunate enough to have plenty of good weather and lots of wildlife to see on this trip. I love the ship Plancius. The expeditionary crew was phenomenall. Each one addded their own skills and character. They were always kind. The galley crew was amazing. Super good food ALL the time. Well worth the money spent. I'd go again in a heartbeat.
Oceanwide and their staff provided the best adventure that we have experienced in our 60 years. The snowcapped mountains, whales, penguins, seals, zodiac rides, kayaks, staff friendliness/knowledge and the quality of the food was above & beyond our expectations. The Drake Passage was not a 'lake' but it also was not the 'shake' we were expecting so this made most passengers very happy. Well done Oceanwide.

This was my husband and my 7th continent. Our only requirement was to plant our feet on the continent. Job done!! But wait, there is SO MUCH MORE... From the staff and ship mates to the scenery and wildlife we could not have experienced more awe. The diversity of our shipmates was heartwarming with our shared love for adventure, friendship, interest in preserving nature and having fun! A wonderful time of nations, gender, interests and age coming together. I was blown away by how close we were to nature. Even with exercising the utmost care to not disturb them in their natural habitat. Zoom lenses were not really necessary. And then there is the Drake Passage. Though I would never consider crossing it without some sort of seasick medication, it actually was fun. You just have to roll with it!!

Basecamp is a great way to experience and see Antarctica. This was a great trip - very grateful to the expedition team, boat crew and staff - each of these people made the trip outstanding. We were fortunate with weather. The boat (including access to the bridge), accommodations and food were outstanding. We did have very good weather. Activities included Kayak, Polar plunge, Mountaineering, Camping, Zodiacs, Trekking/walking. Pippa and expedition leadership maximized opportunities for all of us to get off the boat each day (mostly 2x/day). The rest of the expedition team were great, and especially want to mention Ursula (minkes/Zodiac), Kiran and Erin (Kayaks), tall David (Mountaineering), Saskia (camping), Jakub (iceman), Georgina and Koen (Zodiacs, photo), Andrew (birds / Peterman Island and Drake). This should not take away from any of the other guides - all were outstanding.

Everything in this trip is excepcionnal. I loved everything about it. All the staff was professional, kind and fun. Our ship, the Plancius, has the perfect size. She was cosy, a “real” ship, not one of these giant cruise boats. I loved it!! All the gear for the activities was in good conditions and has great quality. Security for the passengers and the wildlife was always the major issue. I have no words to describe the beauty and purity of the Antarctic Peninsula. It was like a dream. It touched something in my very soul. Every day in Antarctica brought new wonders and priceless treasures. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life!
