Wat is de hoofdstad van Ascension Island?
Georgetown is de hoofdstad van Ascension Eiland, ongeveer de helft van de totale bevolking woont er. Het is de grootste plaats van het eiland met een klein centrum met ziekenhuis, supermarkt en bibliotheek. De schoolkinderen van Georgetown moeten echter zo’n 5 kilometer met de boot heen en terug om de school te bereiken.
Hoeveel mensen wonen er op Ascension Island?
Ascension Eiland heeft een populatie van ongeveer 880 inwoners, waarvan ongeveer de helft in de hoofdstad Georgetown wonen. Geen van deze inwoners is echter inheems op het eiland, ze zijn allemaal afkomstig uit zo’n 15 landen van over de hele wereld, zoals Groot-Brittannië, de Verenigde Staten en Sint Helena.
Tot welk land behoord Ascension Island?
Ascension Eiland behoort tot de British Overseas Territories. Het werd vermoedelijk voor het eerst gezien in 1501 maar de officiële datum van zijn ontdekking is 21 mei 1503. Op deze datum wordt Hemelvaartsdag gevierd, Ascension Day in het Engels en daarnaar is het eiland genoemd.
Het eiland staat sinds 1815 onder Brits gezag. Al een lange tijd is op het eiland een Britse luchtmachtbasis gevestigd. De landingsbaan is op een gegeven moment zelfs nog verlengd om als noodlandingsbaan voor de Amerikaanse Space Shuttles te kunnen dienen.
