Oceanwide Expeditions publishes its first ESG report, setting course for more responsible expedition travel

by Oceanwide Expeditions Actualités 21.10.2026

Oceanwide Expeditions, a veteran polar operator and leader in the expedition cruise industry, has published its first Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report.

The report outlines the company’s progress in reducing its environmental impact, protecting nature, supporting science and research, and investing in the future of polar exploration.

21.10.26 - Vlissingen, NL - Oceanwide Expeditions, a veteran polar operator and leader in the expedition cruise industry, has published its first Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report, marking an important milestone in its ongoing commitment to more responsible expedition travel.

The report brings together initiatives across the company’s operations, from fleet efficiency improvements and reducing waste to supporting scientific research, investing in its people, and a reforestation and stewardship project. It also outlines the company’s priorities for the years ahead, including the planned introduction of two next-generation eco-sail expedition vessels from 2029.

“Our first ESG report is an important step in being transparent about where we stand, what we have achieved, and where we still need to improve. Exploring the polar regions is an immense privilege, and it comes with a responsibility to understand our impact and take meaningful action. This report gives us a strong foundation to measure our progress, make better-informed decisions, and continue learning as we work toward a more responsible future for expedition travel.” - Rémi Bouysset, CEO, Oceanwide Expeditions.

Guided by the principle, “Do the right thing. Do things right,” Oceanwide Expeditions aims to provide meaningful access to the Arctic and Antarctica while recognizing its responsibility to protect and support the environments, ecosystems and communities of these regions.

Oceanwide Expeditions is investing in its existing vessels' efficiency through measures including route planning, engine optimization, hull maintenance, and waste heat recovery.

Further improvements span onboard operations and the supply chain. The company’s hotel teams have led initiatives to eliminate single-use plastics, reduce food and energy waste, adopt more environmentally conscious cleaning products, and make more purposeful food choices.

The company also partners with local suppliers and has reduced emissions associated with its supply and logistics chain. The company also aligns closely with the framework provided by the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO) and the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO), ensuring responsible operations in the Arctic and Antarctica.

In March, Oceanwide Expeditions announced the signing of a Letter of Intent in 2026 to build two next-generation eco-sail expedition vessels, planned to join its expedition fleet from 2029. With hybrid technologies and energy storage systems planned, the vessels represent an opportunity to improve operational efficiency and reduce carbon intensity.

The investment reflects the company’s ambition to evolve its fleet while preserving the small-ship approach, active experiences, and close connection to nature that define its expeditions.

In 2023, the company acquired more than 1,600 hectares of degraded rainforest in the Brazilian Amazon and began a long-term restoration and stewardship program. The project aims to restore native ecosystems, protect endangered plant and animal species, support biodiversity, contribute to carbon sequestration, and create opportunities for local communities. It also supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including Climate Action, Life Below Water, Life on Land, and Decent Work and Economic Growth.

The initiative is entirely self-funded, and Oceanwide Expeditions guests contribute directly through their participation in the company’s expeditions.

Education and scientific engagement are also central to Oceanwide Expeditions’ approach to responsible exploration. Through citizen science initiatives and support for research projects, guests can help build a better understanding of the environments they visit. Oceanwide Expeditions also supports organizations such as the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust (UKAHT) and the South Georgia Heritage Trust (SGHT) and has long-standing relationships with several remote communities, including the island of Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic Ocean.

Doing the right thing & doing things right

Sustainability extends beyond environmental performance. The knowledge, commitment, and expertise of the company's expedition teams are essential to delivering meaningful experiences, and the company emphasizes employee safety, wellbeing, and professional development.

Responsible exploration also means considering the cumulative effects of tourism as interest in the polar regions grows. Through small-scale operations, careful landing planning, responsible wildlife encounters, and an education-first approach, the company seeks to balance access to these extraordinary destinations with respect for their ecological sensitivity.

“ESG is not a separate program running alongside our business. It is connected to the decisions we make every day: how we operate our ships, how we look after our people, how we engage with science, and how we protect the places we visit. We have made progress, but we cannot afford complacency. Our ambition is to keep improving and to help ensure that the wonder of the polar world continues to inspire generations to come.” - Rémi Bouysset, CEO, Oceanwide Expeditions.
