What will I see while kayaking?
Expect rugged shorelines sloping up into snow-capped mountains, pristine beaches, and icebergs that transform the water beneath you into a brilliant blue. You may also spot some local wildlife while blending peacefully into your natural surroundings.
Do I need previous kayaking experience?
Oceanwide Expeditions offers optional kayak outings as part of our expedition program for those keen on exploring the polar waters. Unlike other kayak excursions that require prior experience, our ‘one-off’ kayak outing is accessible to all passengers regardless of their paddling background.
Our skilled guides will provide all necessary instructions and support to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. Whether you're a novice or an experienced paddler, you'll have the opportunity to explore stunning scenery and encounter wildlife at your own pace.
Is polar kayaking safe?
Safety is our top priority, and we adhere to strict guidelines to ensure a secure environment for all participants. Each kayak excursion is conducted within a safe distance from the ship, with a Zodiac boat on standby at all times. Our double-seat sea kayaks ensure stability and comfort throughout use.
While weather and ice conditions may affect the time of the kayak excursion, our team will always prioritize safety. We will only proceed with outings when conditions permit.
For those joining our Basecamp program, the kayak outing is included at no additional cost. This version of the activity requires minimal experience, allowing even beginners to participate. Additionally, there are no supplementary charges for any special activities on Basecamp trips.
Do I have to bring my own kayaking equipment?
We will provide all necessary equipment for you to experience polar kayaking. There are some supplementary items you must bring yourself. We have broken this down for you to make things simple.
We will provide the following items:
- Seven double-seat sea kayaks on Plancius & Ortelius
- 14 double-seat sea kayaks on Hondius
- Paddles with anti-drip rings
- Basic (4 mm neoprene) wetsuits in different sizes
- Kayak spray cover
- Waterproof lightweight jacket (cagoule)
- Life jacket / kayak vest
- Neoprene boots
Please bring the following gear:
- thermal underwear, bottom and top (for under the wetsuit)
- fleece jacket or vest to wear over your thermal underwear
- gloves (insulated ski or snowboard gloves with grip or neoprene watersport gloves)
- waterproof bag (if you are bringing a camera or binoculars)
- fleece hat
- turtleneck or neck gaiter
- thick socks
- sunglasses
- sunblock
Avoid bringing cloth clothing like T-shirts or jeans. Once wet (from water or sweat), these will stay wet for a long time – not a comfortable experience in polar weather!
Alternative kayaking options
In addition to our one-off kayaking activity, we also offer two other kayaking experiences:
Kayaking
One of the best ways to immerse yourself in the polar world, our kayaking activity allows you to experience these spectacular locations from the comfort of a kayak, getting you up close to the drama of life at the edges of the world.
Depending on the length and type of kayaking excursions planned for your trip, you may need prior kayaking experience, although beginners are welcome on our Basecamp trips.
