The polar plunge is an optional activity you can take part in during your expedition cruise. For many of our passengers, the polar plunge is one of the most memorable experiences - a strong claim considering the amazing wildlife and landscapes they see at the edges of the world!
This shore-based activity is offered in the Arctic and Antarctica when local conditions allow. We always ensure that the polar plunge is experienced safely and consider factors such as the weather, wildlife, and timing when planning where and when our guests will take the plunge.
How do we polar plunge in Antarctica and the Arctic?
We cannot offer the polar plunge directly from the ship or Zodiac for safety reasons. Rather, we select a suitable beach from which the brave few can immerse themselves in the invigorating polar waters. Towels will be on hand for you to dry off and warm up after your time in the water, and after your plunge, the next stop will be the warmth of the ship, where a hot drink awaits!
The polar plunge activity always takes place under the direct supervision of our guides to ensure the safety of our guests.
How do I prepare for a polar plunge in Antarctica or the Arctic?
The full details of the polar plunge will be explained during the onboard briefings given by your expedition leader during your trip. Generally, it is important to ensure your clothes remain dry so you can change back into them after you exit the water. Usually, the polar plunge is planned after a day's activities. This means that you will already be dressed warmly. However, be sure to pack gloves, a hat, and warm outer layers if you are taking the plunge at a more ad-hoc moment.
It is also highly recommended to wear shoes or some form of footwear for your polar plunge. Doing so helps protect your feet from potentially uneven ground or objects in the water.
You might also like to consider keeping perfumes, deodorants, body creams, and hair styling products to a minimum on the day of your plunge. This helps preserve the icy waters and enables us to leave as few traces as possible in these pristine environments.
Last but certainly not least, don't forget your bathing suit!
